Nest Hello Design Review

Google has done an excellent job designing its doorbell. Slimmer and thinner, the Nest Hello can easily fit into compact location. On the doorbell, we have a button lit by a blue ring light with the camera above it. Sadly, Nest Hello video doorbell only comes in one color, which is black

Nest Hello design

The Nest Hello Video Doorbell measures 4.6 x 1.7 x 1 inches and has rounded corners.

Nest Hello measurement

The Nest Hello requires a wired connection, which explains its small and slimmer size since it doesn’t have a battery inside.

Nest Hello: Quality Camera

Nest Hello video doorbell delivers a high-quality video and is, without a doubt, one of the best qualities I’ve seen from a video doorbell. It projects a video in 1600 by 1200 pixels with a framerate of 30 frames per second

Also, the nest hello has a 160-degree viewing angle so it covers a large field of view but using either the included nest wedge or a nest hello angle mount can help improve what you want to see at your front door.

NOTE

  • UXGA (Ultra Extended Graphics Array) is a type of display that offers a resolution of 1600 pixels horizontally by 1200 pixels vertically. This amounts to a total of 1,920,000 pixels on the screen, which gives much more detail on the video.
  • The Nest Hello video doorbell stream constantly to the cloud and record everything, which means that you can review anything that happened in front of your door even if Nest didn’t catch a single movement.

Overall Key Point - Video quality

  • Resolution : 1600 by 1200 pixels with a framerate of 30 frames per second.
  • Field of view : 160-degree viewing angle so it covers a large field of view

At night, the camera uses its IR LEDs to see correctly in the dark. These cameras were powerful enough to light up my front door. However, we found that some of the details of the image were lost, but the quality was generally the same as when it was daytime.

Nest night vision quality

TESTING – In our test, we found that fast-moving video loses some detail, but as soon as the person approaches the front door, you get a crystal, clear picture of it. It is easy to recognize individuals even if they have a facial imperfection.

Video quality depends on your internet

The Nest Hello requires good Wi-Fi and a good internet connection to provide high-resolution videos. However, poor internet connexion may cause you to experience bad quality and long delays between activation and notification.

Ring pro internet

NOTE – Nest recommends at least 2Mbps for reliable videos. If your Wi-Fi network is having trouble getting to your door, you can consider getting a Wi-Fi extension. We suggest you use the Nest extension [Available on Amazon]

How Nest transfers your data to your phone

First, Nest sends the video to your router from the Wi-Fi. Subsequently, the router uploads the video on the Nest cloud servers via your internet connection. Finally, your Nest app on your phone will download the videos of the Nest cloud servers on your phone. If some of these steps are slow, you will experience bad videos.

The Nest Hello doorbell will save all your recordings to the cloud for 5$ a month or 50$ per year for the standards plan. The mid-tier subscription starts at either $10 per month or $100 per year, while the top-tier subscription starts at $30 per month or $300 per year.

Keep in mind that Nest offers a 30 day free trial for Nest Aware, at no additional cost.

Nest Hello Facial Recognition

Nest Hello is the only doorbell with a face recognition feature. Once you teach it the names and faces of your frequent visitors, the Nest app will notify you of their name in the push notification.

For example, my dad and mom are both saved in my Nest doorbell, so every time they come to my house, I get a notification. This is useful when I’m not at home, and they want to get inside the house.

NOTE – With the smart lock of Nest, Nest hello can also unlock your door to your trusted visitors even if you are not at home. [Check Price]

So, how does Nest facial recognition work? It’s very simple. Nest takes some pictures of the person you trust and compares the photos with the person in front of your door to confirm the person’s identity. If that’s the right person you will get a push notification with her name.

EXPECTATION – Honestly, at first, I thought Nest would have problems recognizing the right person, but I was totally off. The facial recognition of Nest works well and more than I expected. Nest only confused my brother with me twice on 12 attempts.

Also, to use Familiar Faces, you have to subscribe to Nest Aware, which starts at $5 per month.

Nest Hello Sound Quality

The Nest Hello Video Doorbell gives you the option to talk and hear through the doorbell. This lets you provide instruction to your visitor or warn intruders or curious people. The speaker on the doorbell is loud and clear

Additionally, the app lets you disable the microphone on the camera, which turns off audio recording and streaming. Or, you can just disable the audio for the record, which will still make you able to hear the sound over the Livestream.

This feature could be convenient if you live on a loud street or if you live on a street where cars pass a lot in front of your door.

How Does The Nest Hello’s Motion Detection Work?

The Nest Hello video doorbell will send you an alert by push notification and email if it detects any motion or loud noise in front of your door. When someone rings at your door, the app opens to full-screen video and gives you the possibility to see and talk with the person.

NOTE – You can also set up three pre-programmed messages that will play when someone ring at your door.

Motion detection

Nest will also let you set up a detection zone to avoid the wrong alert. However, the detection zones can’t be set in the app and can only be arranged through the web interface

Google Nest Hello Application

Having an excellent mobile app for these smart devices is very important. Ring will not disappoint you with their application. It provides an easy-to-use interface and allows you to use the same app for all your Nest devices, whether for a doorbell, a security camera, or a thermostat.

You can configure the zone motions from the app as well as your notifications Schedule so that the alert does not interrupt you at inappropriate times.

You can also give access to your devices to other members of your family. As a result, they will be able to watch the videos as well as answer the doorbells.

Nest hello app

The app also offers you the option ‘Live View’, which allows you to see at any time what is happening around your door. To do this, you must tap on the doorbell name and click on ‘Live View’.

Setup - Installation

First, you will need to verify if you have enough voltage since Nest Hello is designed to replace an existing wired doorbell. You will need 16 to 24-volts of power to be able to operate the doorbell.

NOTE – If you do not have enough volt, it is possible for you to add a transformer that will provide 16 to 24-volt power.

You will also need to install the Chime Connector included in the package in your chime box inside your house. Personally, my chime box was in my living room, but yours could be in the kitchen or somewhere else. Usually, the Doorbell chime boxes are located in well-trafficked areas of a house.

The installation is not difficult and for more information you can watch the video below from Google

Is the Nest Hello a good value?

Ok so bottom line… is the Nest Hello a good value? Really it depends on what you’re looking for. If you want a doorbell with amazing features and the absolute “best of the best”, the Nest Hello is what you are looking for.

Nest Hello vs Ring pro

It has all of the most advanced features and it’s the only doorbell we’ve seen to date that has an facial  recognition

That being said, the price of the Nest doorbell is higher than other brands. The cost is reasonable since it has a modern style, an advanced custom motion zone, and a facial recognition, so it definitely adds a significant amount of value to justify the higher cost.
