Arlo Pro 3 Review

Since the early days of Arlo, they have set their foot in the market for producing high-quality, wire-free, weatherproof, and excellent smart cams. The Arlo Pro 2 has been widely received in the market as one of the best home security smart cams, making it into various top 20 lists. But since the release of Arlo Pro 3, that isn’t the case anymore.

Many who got their hands on an Arlo Pro 3 now has considered it to be their new favorite home security camera. And it’s no surprise why. The Arlo Pro 3’s design, performance, features, and the value it provides you will blow other home security cameras out of the water.

Why People love the Arlo Pro 3

What made people love the Arlo Pro 3, and the rest of other Arlo products is how crisp and clear the images are, how easy it is to install, and a bunch of added security features – Features such as sirens, motion-activated spotlight, smart notifications, and colored night vision. It also is flexible when it comes to integration for smart homes. It recognizes Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Siri voice support. It also has a built-in USB port and has the capabilities to support 2TB of local storage.

We’ve reviewed the Arlo Pro 3 for you so you can decide for yourself if it’s the right investment.

RELATED – If you previously own the Arlo Pro 2, you can use its hub and just buy the Arlo Pro 3’s standalone camera. Additional cameras for Arlo Pro 3 cost $199.99.

Pros

  • Great and functional design The Arlo Pro 3 has retained the minimalistic design of the pro 2 so it doesn’t stand out that much. Every part of the camera is accessible and is easy to work with.
  • Crisp and clear image quality – The Arlo Pro 3 was carefully designed to not compete with the Ultra, as such, the only limitation it has is that it can’t record at 4k. Other than that, the Arlo Pro 3 is capable of recording crisp, fine, and detailed images.
  • Tons of features – The Arlo Pro 3 are packed with features and functionalities that are roughly the same as the Arlo Ultra.
  • Easy to install and set-up – With a user-friendly app that helps you throughout the process, installing the Arlo Pro 3 is a breeze.

Cons

  •  Expensive – This is the main concern of people who are looking to secure their home. The initial cost of the system is too much. For this price, you only get one hub and one camera, which isn’t ideal if you want to keep your place secured. Unless you only want to monitor one spot.
  • Crisp and clear image quality – The Arlo Pro 3 was carefully designed to not compete with the Ultra, as such, the only limitation it has is that it can’t record at 4k. Other than that, the Arlo Pro 3 is capable of recording crisp, fine, and detailed images.
  • Not The Highest Resolution – Although the Pro 3 can record at very crisp images, it’s still limited in terms of resolution. Meaning, when you play the image on a larger screen, you’ll experience some tearing or pixilation.

NOTE – QUICK COMPARISON

So the Arlo 2 pro that was so high up in people’s list last year is nowhere near the Arlo Pro 3 and Ultra. The Arlo Pro 3 has better features, capabilities, and functionalities compared to the old Pro 2. When the Arlo Pro 2 is compared to the other two, it just seemed incompetent at providing your household with security. A siren that’s integrated on the hug rather than the camera is inefficient when it comes to scaring away burglars.

And if you look at the Pro 3 and Pro 2’s features, the Pro 3 greatly overshadows its predecessor.  The Arlo Pro 2 doesn’t have HDR, zooming, auto-tracking, and it can’t distinguish what is seen on the camera. Overall, Arlo Pro 2 is greatly limited.

The Pro 3, on the other hand, is quite a different story. The features of the Pro 3 rival that of Arlo’s flagship product – Arlo Ultra. Which both are way ahead of what the Pro 2 can offer.

Arlo Pro 3 - Design Review

The design of the camera has been the same as its predecessors. The camera is housed in a white enclosure and has a black face with dimensions of 3.5 x 2.0 x 3.0 inches (HWD). By pressing a button that’s right beside the power connector, you can remove the enclosure.

Arlo Pro 3 measurements

NOTE – Once you’ve removed the enclosure, you can now get access to the rechargeable battery pack, which has a charge life of up to three to six months – which will depend on usage and the weather condition because battery tends to drain faster when the weather is cold.

INFO – It’s relatively the same size as the Arlo Ultra camera – Arlo’s flagship product.

Arlo Pro 3 - Quality Camera

The Arlo Pro 3 is equipped with a 4-megapixel sensor and high dynamic range capabilities or HDR which captures 2k quality videos either in 2,560 or 1,440 pixels. The camera of the Arlo Pro 3 can zoom up to 12x, has a 160 FOV or field of view, and utilizes two infrared LEDS for its black and white night vision.

The camera also has an embedded spotlight which gives you the option to have colored night vision.

Overall Key Point - Video quality

  • Captures 2k quality videos either in 2,560 or 1,440 pixels.
  • The camera of the Arlo Pro 3 can zoom up to 12x, has a 160 FOV or field of view

Packed inside the Arlo Pro 3 are quite a handful of cameras. The switch to recording at 2k resolution means that you slightly get less detail, but the ability to zoom at very high rates without losing a significant amount of details is a much more important feature to have.

The HDR also helps tons in balancing out the light and the dark. It helps the camera provide you with clear imaging with realistic colors. For example, if you install your Pro 3 facing your door, the image highlights don’t get blown over the windows. Many cameras charge a huge back for HDR features, but with the Arlo Pro 3, it’s part of the package.

Arlo pro 3 Night vision

The ability to see at a 160 degree is a huge upgrade compared to the Pro 2’s measly 130-degree FOV. When it comes to security cameras, a wider viewing angle and greater coverages help ensure better protection.

NOTE – Because the Pro 3 is only recording at 1080p, it significantly cuts down on battery consumption, allowing you to run the camera for months on end without it needing any battery change. Maybe for a good six months or so before batteries need to be charged.

Arlo Pro 3 Sound Quality

The Arlo Pro 3 gives you the option to talk and hear through the camera, which will let you provide instructions to your visitor or warn intruders/curious people.

The camera also has noise-canceling microphones for better audio quality, a speaker array for sound detection, and an 80dB siren that can be activated when it detects motion.

Arlo Pro 3 Application

Having an excellent mobile app for these smart devices is very important. Arlo will not disappoint you with their application. It provides an easy-to-use interface and allows you to use the same app for all your Arlo devices, whether for a doorbell or a security camera.

You can configure the zone motions from the app as well as your notifications Schedule so that the alert does not interrupt you at inappropriate times.

You can gain access to individual cameras through the Arlo app, which is still the same for any Arlo cameras. The app will display each installed camera you have on your household with the thumbnail of its latest captured activity.

The app provides you a wide range of control over your camera such as view its live stream, mute the speakers, initiate two-way communication, turn on the spotlight, and more.

Setup - Installation

As with other Arlo cameras, the installation process of the Arlo Pro 3 is easy. First, would be to install the Arlo app either on the App Store or Google Play. From there on out, the app is great at holding your hand throughout the process, teaching and instructing you how to connect your hub to your router.

Arlo Pro 3 installation

NOTE – In order for the camera to even work, it needs to be connected to the VMB4540 SmartHub, which comes with your purchase of the full kit. The SmartHub is equipped with an 802.11n Wi-Fi radio, a LAN port, a power jack, and a USB port for additional storage space.

Once I’ve successfully connected the hub to your router and have set it up, it’s now time for the cameras. The process is the same as setting up the hub. All you need to do is press “Start Adding Cameras” and select Arlo Pro 3.

If you’ve already inserted the batteries on your camera, the app will automatically detect it and its info. Set it up how you like, give your camera a name, and use the magnetic mount to mount it outside.

Tips – If you have the old hub for the Arlo Pro 2, you have the option to use it and just buy the camera rather than the whole kit.

Is the Arlo Pro 3 a good value?

The Arlo Pro 3 is a wonderful and worthy upgrade to that of the Pro 2. It’s also a reliable option for those who are in need of a smart outdoor security system – Offering crisp, clear, and reliable images without having to overpay much as opposed to getting an Arlo Ultra.

Yes, The Arlo Pro 3 is cheaper than the Arlo Ultra, but if you look at it from a different perspective – $500 for a starter kit of one hub and one camera is way too expensive. It’s a tough barrier of entry to breakthrough for those who want to secure their homes.

Arlo Pro 3

If by chance you come across a great deal regarding Arlo Ultra’s, we highly recommend that you get that one as opposed to getting a Pro 3. It has some slight upgrades over Pro 2 like 4k recording, but the best would be you get two cameras.

If we disregard the price, you’re still getting a quality and reliable plus some awesome features with the Pro 3. Arlo Ultra will probably cost you more in the long term due to how heavy 4k recordings are, and how much it’ll eat up your cloud storage.

The Arlo Pro 3 may be the best option for anyone wanting an upgrade regardless of the cost. Overall, the Arlo Pro 3 is just significantly better than the security cameras that are available in the market right now.
